Funky Bathroom Wallpaper Ideas (Start With the Tropical Cats)

The safest bathroom in the world is still just a bathroom. Paint it beige, and people will wash their hands and leave. Cover one wall in gold-framed cats doing extremely human things — one of them reading on the toilet, palms in the background — and they will linger. They will also ask you where you got the wallpaper.

That is the job of funky bathroom wallpaper. Not a gimmick. A point of view.

Every pattern at RebelMod is designed by artist Judy Quintero. The ideas below are built around real designs you can sample, peel-and-stick, or hang as traditional paper — starting with the mural that already behaves like a guest-bath legend.

1. Lead with tropical cats (the powder-room hero)

If you only wallpaper one bathroom wall this year, make it Whimsical Tropical Cat Bathroom Wallpaper.

The design is a tropical twist on vintage portraiture: gold frames, palm leaves, cats who have fully moved into the house and claimed the good light. Each framed cat prints around 13 inches tall, which is large enough to read from the doorway and small enough to feel like a gallery, not a cartoon.

Where it works best

  • Powder room, all four walls. Tiny rooms can take a full story. Wrap the pattern. Keep the vanity simple, the mirror a little extra, the hardware brass or matte black.
  • Small full bath, one accent wall. Put it on the wall you see first — usually behind the toilet or facing the door. Leave the shower and splash zone alone.
  • Laundry room. Same cheeky energy, fewer humidity questions.

Judy sells this as peel-and-stick, traditional (paste), and pre-pasted non-woven. Peel-and-stick is the renter move and the Saturday-afternoon move. Traditional and pre-pasted are the stay-put options if you own the walls.

Do not put any of it inside the shower or where the faucet throws water every morning. RebelMod’s bathroom-friendly papers are meant for dry and moderately humid rooms, not direct water.

Order a sample if your tile is warm or your lighting is yellow. The original colorway is the lush green palm version. Pink towels or dusty tile? 2. Treat the small bath like a jewel box, not a closet

Funky does not mean busy-for-the-sake-of-busy. In a small bathroom, one strong pattern plus quiet everything else looks considered. Three competing patterns plus a seashell soap dispenser looks like a souvenir shop.

A formula that actually fits 40 square feet

  1. Pick one illustrated pattern with a clear story (cats, animals reading, bubble-gum history).
  2. Keep fixtures and towels in two colors max.
  3. Repeat one wallpaper color in a hand towel, a tray, or a small frame.
  4. Light the mirror like you mean it. Dark wallpaper without light is a cave. Dark wallpaper with a bright sconce is a jewel box.

If you have wainscoting or beadboard, wallpaper the upper half only. The chair rail gives the pattern a stopping point, and the lower wall takes the splash. If you have a recessed niche, paper the back of it even if you leave the big walls plain.

3. Put the weirdest wall where guests stand still

The wall behind the toilet is the classic accent for a reason. Nobody is rushing.

  • Facing the door. First impression. Best for the tropical cats or any large illustrated scene.
  • Behind the toilet. Intimate, slightly cheeky, protected from most spray.
  • Behind the vanity, cropped by a big mirror. The mirror doubles the pattern and makes the room feel wider. Works especially well with the cat portraits, because the frames start to look like a salon hang.

Skip the ceiling unless ventilation is excellent. Moisture rises. Save the drama for vertical surfaces.

4. Other funky bathroom wallpaper that is not cats (on purpose)

Once the tropical cats have claimed the powder room, the guest bath and kids’ bath still need a personality.

Animals who read questionable books. Whimsical Animals Reading Wallpaper is Judy’s original mural: a pigeon studying The Art of Pooping on People, a cat working through The Subtle Art of Getting Guests to Leave by 9 P.M., a squirrel protecting its nuts. Bathroom humor with actual drawing. Hang it in a kids’ bath or a guest powder room and it will get photographed.

Founding Father, bubble gum. Benjamin Franklin Bubble Gum Funny Wallpaper is the RebelMod origin story on a wall — irreverent, floral, impossible to ignore. Pair with white tile and unfussy hardware so Ben does not have to compete with a mosaic.

Dogs in florals. Whimsical Floral Dogs Patchwork Wallpaper is watercolor, patchwork, and very good in a family bath where you want charm instead of toilet jokes.

Monkeys on a chandelier, or Lady Liberty chewing gum. Monkey Bar Ivory Wallpaper is decadent and a little feral. Quirky Statue of Liberty Bubble Gum Art Wallpaper is Ben Franklin’s New York cousin. Either one belongs in a city powder room that would rather be a tiny party.

5. Peel-and-stick vs traditional — pick the install, not a personality

RebelMod does not sell a different “bathroom brand” of wallpaper. The same Judy designs come in materials that match how you live.

Peel-and-stick. No paste. Repositionable for about 24 hours. PVC-free, matte, wipeable with a damp cloth. Ideal for rentals, first-timers, and powder rooms. Prep still matters: smooth, clean, fully dry walls.

Traditional (paste) and pre-pasted non-woven. More of a committed install. Pre-pasted activates with water. Traditional is happiest with a pro.

Panel math, not vibes. Panels are 30 inches wide. Divide wall width by 30 and round up. Pick a height (48" through 144") that covers your wall with trim extra. Do not slice a panel down the middle and expect the cats — or the book titles — to match. Order every panel in one batch so the color is consistent.

Not sure? Samples start at $10. For bathrooms specifically: run the fan, keep paper off direct water, and wipe gently. Moisture-resistant is not the same as waterproof.

6. Style the rest of the room so the wallpaper can talk

  • Let the pattern own the color story. Pull one green, one gold, or one mauve into a towel. Stop there.
  • Simple vanity, better mirror. A plain white or oak vanity plus a scalloped or antique mirror is the look.
  • Hardware as contrast. Brass on green palms. Matte black on mauve. Chrome on the blue colorway.
  • Skip the themed accessories. You already have cats in frames. You do not also need a cat soap dispenser.
