The Artist
Judy Quintero is a Miami-based artist and designer whose work sits at the intersection of fine art, humor, and home decor. She's exhibited at Art Basel, been featured in Pantone's color forecasting, and spent years developing a style that's unmistakably hers — bold, playful, detailed, and always a little rebellious.
But RebelMod didn't start as a wallpaper company. It started because Judy couldn't find wallpaper she actually liked.
How RebelMod Started
"Everything was either boring or trying too hard," Judy says about the wallpaper market when she started looking. "Beige florals. Generic geometrics. Nothing with any personality."
So she made her own. The first design was the now-iconic Benjamin Franklin Bubble Gum wallpaper — a founding father blowing a bubble against a riot of colorful florals. It was irreverent, it was beautiful, and it was unlike anything else on the market.
People noticed. That single design became RebelMod's bestseller, and the collection grew from there.
The Design Process
Every RebelMod design begins as an original illustration. Judy works digitally, but the process is anything but automated:
- Concept. Each design starts with an idea — sometimes funny (animals reading absurd books), sometimes elegant (botanical etchings), sometimes both (a pigeon studying "The Art of Pooping on People"). Judy sketches, researches, and refines until the concept feels right.
- Illustration. The detailed painting process. Every animal, every flower, every book title is hand-rendered with attention to expression, color, and composition. This is where the personality comes in — the subtle smirk on a cat's face, the way a goose holds its monocle, the color play between foreground and background.
- Pattern engineering. For wallpaper, the illustration needs to repeat seamlessly across panels. This is where art meets math — making sure patterns align perfectly at every edge while still feeling organic and natural, not mechanical.
- Color refinement. Colors are tuned for printing accuracy across different materials (peel & stick and traditional wallpaper each respond differently to ink). What looks right on screen needs to look right on the wall, in different lighting, at different times of day.
- Material testing. Every design is printed, installed, and lived with before it hits the shop. If it doesn't look right on an actual wall, it doesn't ship.
